Five Exoplanets

There are countless worlds beyond our solar system in galaxies light-years away. Beginning with five exoplanets, our mission is to spark curiosity in space exploration and explore planets that could sustain human life.

Introduction

The project prompt was to create an interactive touched based application, that could communicate a topic through an experience. I chose to pursue the topic of exoplanets as I am fascinated with the idea that there are planets just like our own out there; Many of which could potentially sustain human life. I wanted to create an app that could allow the user to discover and engage with five different exoplanets.

Problem

Problem

There are thousands of discovered exoplanets. It can be difficult to know where to start when you want to know more about what an exoplanet is and what this could mean for space exploration.

There are many applications about planets and even a few that focus specifically on exoplanets. A few of the apps assume the user has extensive knowledge of space, or their target user may be a younger audience.

UX Trends

When I researched different examples of interactive experiences, many of the UX trends made use of animations and visually compelling compositions to grab the user’s attention. Furthermore, when the user interacts with the element, information specific to that element will appear on the screen. This gave me the idea of the user discovering new facts when they interacted with the exoplanet.

For the app, I chose shades of burn orange and a complimentary blue color. The red-orange is reminiscent of the surface of Mars which is rich in iron oxide. The dark blues pairs well with the rich rusty orange and pays homage to the vast darkness of space. Additionally, I created small icons to help demonstrate interactable elements, such as the button that will prompt the user to interact with the planet’s surface.

For the type, I chose Garamond Pro for the educational aspects of the app. The Serif is not only sophisticated but easy to read for larger bodies of text. Additionally, I used Avenair for the interactive elements of the app, such as the button to maintain a modern, futuristic appeal.

I began with small, quick sketches to map out my initial thoughts and ideas. I pursued different ways the app could introduce the planets and how information could animate in.

Next, I took a few of my sketches and brought them into Illustrator. At this stage, my main focus was on the user experience of the app, and how the user may be presented with information when tapping on a planet.

Then, I began to polish the wireframes by adding headers, body copy, images, and more. This allowed me to get a better idea of how the elements, such as a 3D planet might appear on a tablet.

What did I learn?

What did I learn?

What did I learn?

This project’s topic was most challenging. There is a lot we know about exoplanets, but there is still a lot we do not know. Furthermore, new information is emerging every day. I focused on topics that might appeal to novice space-lovers, such as myself. For example, could we live there and how long might it take to reach this planet from Earth? Finally, and most importantly, this project has taught me to appreciate our Earth. There might be others out there, but the possibility of reaching the next habitable exoplanet would take lifetimes. The best thing we can do is take really good care of the planet we currently live on.
